Job description

boilermakerWork includes the erection of all types of wooden structures, form building, framing, inside and outside finishing and installation of all types of hardware. Some examples include the construction of bridge decks; the laying out, cutting and installation of roof framing; laying out and installing trusses; the use of framing squares; the use of roofing materials; welding; the installation of doors, windows, floor, wall and ceiling systems, mitered and/or coped moldings, prefabricated cabinets and tops, insulation and vapor barriers, etc.

Carpenters use blueprints and specifications to determine types of materials and sizes to be used on the job.

Note: Applicant will be required to find their own employment prior to acceptance into the apprenticeship program. The union maintains lists of hiring contractors.

Program involves 7,000 hours/4 years of on-the-job training and at least 144 hours of related training each year (two nights per week).

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the work of the trade.
  • Must pass a math qualification test
  • Must have a high school diploma or certificate of equivalency (GED).
  • Must have a valid driver's license

Selection procedures

Those interested in apprenticeship shall submit an application and will then be given a list of contractors who are hiring. Applicants shall then report back to the Joint Apprenticeship Committee with a letter of sponsorship stating that he/she has found employment and an apprenticeship sponsor. All starting apprentices shall go through a 300-hour probationary period.

Tools Needed

Apprentices are expected to accumulate a basic set of hand tools early in their training. Generally, the total cost of such tools is around $350

Transportation Requirements

Worker is expected to provide own transportation.

Hours

Eight (8) hour days 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM or by union contract.

Wages

Apprentice starts at 62% of the wage earned by a journeyperson, with a raise of 5% for every 6 months worked. Wages include all benefits earned by journey level workers.

Union Dues and Other Fees

There is an initiation fee and monthly membership dues. Check with the local for amounts.
