Job description

boilermakerIncludes the installation of wires and equipment that deliver current in the construction, maintenance, and operation of electrical systems. This includes work on new or old buildings, houses, power plants and other similar places. Work can be either indoors or outdoors, and is sometimes in bad weather. It may be in high places or with high voltage current, either of which is hazardous.



Apprenticeship program

Applications accepted year-round for entry into the Apprenticeship Program. There is a $25 application fee.

The apprenticeship program itself is 5-years /8,000 hours of on-the-job training, and 200 hours of related training each year.

A trades school graduate of a Construction Electricity Program will receive 1600 hours credit and complete a 4 year apprenticeship.


  • Must be 18 years or older. Bring a copy of birth certificate or social security card.
  • Must be a high school graduate or have a GED.
  • Must have one year High School or post HS algebra.
  • Must submit high school transcript or GED scores.
  • Have and maintain a drivers license.
  • Obtain a score of 4 or higher on the NJATC Electrical Aptitude test. Test is given quarterly and is arranged through the JATC office at least 30 days before the test.
  • May submit an Electrical Construction Trade School transcript.

Selection procedures

Interviews are scheduled as needed.

Applicants will be interviewed by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee, which is made up of 4 representatives from management and 4 from the local union.

Once interviewed, an applicant will be ranked in descending order, according to their total composite score (which includes the interview, grades received in day-school program, high school grades, etc.). They will remain on the Eligible Apprentice Applicant List for two years.

The Apprenticeship Office refers all apprentice jobs. Apprentices are sent to work in order of interview ratings.

Tools Needed

Electrician's knife, pencil, ruler, cutting pliers, combination pliers, screwdrivers, hammer, wrenches, hacksaw, chisels, etc. Costs are about $600.

Transportation Requirements

Worker must provide own transportation.


Eight (8) hours daily between 6:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.


Apprentice wages are based on a percentage of journey level wages. 1st year apprentice starts at 40% of what the journeyperson makes; 2nd year 45%; 3rd year 60%; 4th year 75% and the fifth year 90%.

Current Journeyman rate is $35.55 per hour.

Union Dues

The initiation fee is $100.

Note: There is a probationary period of 500 hours of on the job training (OJT). Once this period is over, apprentice will become a member of the union.
