Job description

elevatorElevator construction involves work with basic to solid state electricity and rotating DC generators. Constructors work with pit structures and guide rails. Work involves pit structures, main and counterweight guide rails, machine room and overhead installation, car and counterweight assembly, circuit tracing and troubleshooting, construction wiring, elevator rope replacement, electrical and mechanical repairs, etc. Elevator constructors work with heights and tight spaces inside and outside in all weather.



Apprenticeship program

Applications accepted during the recruitment process.


  • Must be 18 years old or older.
  • Must be a high school graduate or have a GED.
  • Must submit original copy of high school diploma, high school transcript or GED scores.
  • Have and maintain a driver's license.

Selection procedures

Upon opening of recruitment you must request an application.

After returning the completed Apprenticeship applicaiton and a copy of your diploma, high school transcripts or GED certificate you will be scheduled for the Elevator Industry Aptitude Test (EIAT). There is a $25 fee for testing. You must obtain a score of 70% or higher to pass. Applicants who pass the EIAT become eligible to be interviewed by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee, which is made up of 4 representatives from management and 4 representatives from the local union.

Once interviewed, an applicant with a composite score of 70% or higher will be ranked in descending order, with the highest scoring individuals placed at the top of the list. They will remain on the Eligible Apprentice Application List for two years.

Transportation Requirements

Worker must provide own transportation.


Regular working day shall consist of eight (8) hours worked consecutively with an unpaid lunch period, between 6 AM and 5 PM, five (5) days per week, Monday to Friday, inclusive.


Apprentice wages are based on a percentage of journey level wages. Probationary wages are 50% of what the journeyperson makes, 1st year makes 55%, 2nd year makes 65%, 3rd year makes 70% and 4th year makes 80%.

Union Dues

The initiation fee is $440.
