Includes the preparation of floors and the installation of carpet (glued or stretched), sheet vinyl, and resilient tile. In some cases, preparation of floors and installation of prefinished wood and laminate floors are included in the job. Work is physically demanding, and involves the transporting of heavy materials up stairs, etc.

Program is a 4-year/8,000 hour program, with 160 hours of related-instruction each year, offered at the Floorcoverers Training Center during the day.
- Must be 17 years of age or older.
- Must have a high school diploma or Certificate of Equivalency (GED).
- Must show high school transcript or GED scores.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
Interview with the Apprenticeship Coordinator and fulfill the minimum qualifications, then fill out the application (on the basis of the requirements listed above)
The applicant will be given a list of union contractors who are offering sponsorships. It is the responsibility of the applicant to find a contractor to sponsor them. Once an applicant has found a sponsor, he/she must bring a letter of intent to hire to the union local (this must be written on the company letterhead).
Each applicant will undergo a probationary period of not more than four months. Throughout this period, the employer, who will in turn send those evaluations to the union, will evaluate applicant (worker). Prior to the end of the probationary period, the Joint Apprenticeship Committee will interview each qualified applicant. At the end of the probationary period, the union will determine, based on the evaluations, whether to indenture the applicant as an apprentice.
Note: The number of persons who will be indentured will depend entirely on the level of activity within the industry.
Contractors will provide power tools. Worker needs to provide his/her own hand-tools; basic floor covering tools, kicker, trimmer, strip cutter, hammer; which cost about $500.
Worker must provide own transportation.
Eight (8) hours daily between the 6:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
Apprentice starts at 50% of the journeyperson's wage. The first raise is after 2,000 hours, there after raises are every 1,000 hours or approximately six months until journey-level is reached.
The initiation fee of $126 is to be paid right away. Membership dues are $22 monthly plus working dues.
