Job description

latherLathers install the supporting backings on ceilings or walls on which plaster or other materials are applied. Work involves gypsum and composition board and/or wood lathe. The process also includes wall furring, the erection of steel, and tying or lacing metal lath (on both walls and ceilings).

Workers will identify and use all types and sizes of screeds and beads, and will learn to apply drop hangers, runners, and furring to hang ceilings. They will learn to identify and nail diamond mesh, flat rib, high rib, herring bone, paperback and boswick metal lathe.

Apprenticeship program

Program is an 7,000-hour program, with 144 hours of related-training expected each year.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be a high school graduate or certification of equivalency (GED).
  • Applicants shall submit to the committee along with their application:
    • Reliable information on date of birth.
    • High school diploma or GED.

Selection procedures

Applicants will receive a notice as to when and where to go for an oral interview by the JAC. After the interview--if applicants exceed the need of the contractors--they will be scored on an individual basis, with their overall composite score being used in a ranking-type fashion. Placement will be in order of composite score determined by school grades and the interview.

Some employers may require drug screening tests and physical dexterity tests

Apprentices shall be subject to a tryout or probationary period that will not exceed 500 hours of employment.

Tools Needed

8 inch nippers, #7, #8, or #6.5 snips, 16 oz. straight hammer, rock hammer, lathe hatchet, 1/2 and 3/4 cold chisel, 12 oz. plumb bob, 12 inch square, magnet-stub nail holder, I inch by 16 foot tape and 6 foot ruler, 2 foot level, hacksaw, pencils, led and grease, belt and nail bags, circle cutter, key hole saw, foot lift (rock), saw (rock), chalk-box and chalk, utility knife and extra blades, channel iron cutters, screwdriver, pliers, and a T-square.

Total costs run around $500.

Transportation Requirements

Workers must provide their own transportation.

Hours

Typically eight (8) hours daily between 7:00 AM and 3:30 PM.

Wages

Apprentice initially earns 50% of what a journeyperson earns, with a raise given every 1000 hours worked.

Union Dues

There are initiation fees and membership dues based on the level of apprenticeship at the time you enter. (If you have had experience working in another skilled building trade or have other trade schooling you may receive credit for that towards your apprenticeship hours.)
