APPRENTICE WORK EXPERIENCE

General Apprentice Work Experience includes loading and unloading of materials & equipment for roof area/ ground level; Carrying and placing of materials for journeypersons; Basic safety procedures of "hot" and roof safety; Knowledge of tear-off procedures concerning hand tools such as spud bars, forks, pyne bars and other small hand tools; Removal of gravel, felts, insulation, and cleanup of area for reroofing; Operation of power equipment used for roof removal and transportation of asphalt to work areas; Nailing plastic and fabric application on flashing and materials used for protection of flashing from ultraviolet rays; and comprehensive idea of roofing materials.

Composition of asphalts and General Work Abilities. Complete asphalt and roof safety includes: Knowledge of the heating of asphalts relating to skid kettle work, wheel kettles and transports; Primer application for deck preparations; (B.U.R.) preparation of the surface, applications of vapor barriers, when required, insulation application, tade, systems, crickets, cants, applying and cutting all types of roofing asphalt and/or pitch membrane, asphalt applications, proper application and knowledge of all roof penetrations such as; curbs, stacks and drain systems, distribution of roof gravels; Reading knowledge of taper systems and blue print reading; complete knowledge of all roofing equipment.

Elastomers and Plastomers Knowledge includes all categories concerning job preparation as well as application of insulation systems; Knowledge of all E.P.D.M. or P. V. C. systems; Applying the elastomers or plastomer membrane; Application of all detail work such as flashing and penetrations; Anchoring and terminations.

Application of shingling and Waterproofing includes all systems involving shingling, tile, slate and other roofing membrane. Any/all waterproofing systems involved on commercial or residential buildings; Allied Trades that fall under the jurisdiction of Roofers Local Union No. 96.

You will be given a list of employers to apply for a possible job. It is the responsibility of the individual to secure employment.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or in the process of naturalization.
  • Must go through 1,000 hours of pre-apprenticeship training (on-the-job).
  • Should be able to lift 50 pounds.

(Some of the signatory employers require an applicant to pass a drug/alcohol test as well as a physical exam).

Program is 1,000 hours of pre-apprenticeship training and 5,000 hours of apprenticeship training (6,000 total). This usually takes four (4) years to complete, due to the many days of missed work (weather-dependent trade). A minimum of 144 hours of related-instruction each year is also expected.

Tools Needed

Nail apron, insulation knife, utility knife, roofing knife, tape, ruler, seam roller, pliers, adjustable wrench, seam roller, pliers adjustable wrench, screwdrivers, chalkline, flat bar, awl, tin snips, hammer and trowel.

Transportation Requirements

Worker is expected to provide own transportation.

Hours

1,400-1,600 hours per year.

Wage schedule and benefits information is available at the union office.

Union Fees

'Initiation fee is $450. Membership dues are $40 each month, plus a $.97 per hour working assessment.
