Do you like working with your hands and being indoors? A cabinet maker is a skilled, hands-on career where you work in a shop environment. Each shop is a bit different and each requires different types and levels of skill. Examples include plywood shops, those shops that work on roof trusses, beams and rafters; production plants that construct institutional structures such as desks, cabinets, chairs and closets, among others. Cabinet makers focus on the finer details of the wood and what one can do with it.
Apply to be a cabinet maker through the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.
To become a cabinet maker, high school students should take construction, building, shop, and trade courses. Knowledge of tools and how to do construction calculations, such as estimating, subtracting, and finding height, width and volume are important.
An employer/contractor/apprenticeship instructor may require drug and alcohol testing of employees and applicants for employment, including random testing.
